Graphic Novel Illustration
"Avian" first appeared in my sketchbook during the summer of 2001.
I was working for Landmark cinemas. The routine was this: 20 minutes of standing,
tearing tickets, pointing and repeating the same directions over and over again, followed by 20 minutes of nothing. It was during that 20 minutes of nothing that I created this series of anthropomorphic creatures I called "Drag Ducks."
Needless to say 2001 was not a good year for many. Strangely enough, this series, with a storyline about the downfall of a human-like society of birds, found it's way into my mind months before the mysterious "avian flu" and the slew of injustices multiple countries,
organizations, and agencies were about to wage upon each other. The birds reflect this time, for me.
In 2004 I finally put together a graphic novel of sorts including this series. The novel is a glimpse into the history of the "Avian" society, as well as a coloring activity book.
This Spring a full series of 13 painted wooden panels of the "Avian" characters will by shown on display at Hotwire Coffee (North City), just North of Seattle.
